The much anticipated fourth season True Detective is finally on its way to the small screen. Night Country will air on Max January 14th, so mark your calendars!
True Detective, Night Country, Season 4 trailer
It's clear from the first trailer released in April of 2023, that Jodie Foster's Detective Liz Danvers has some sort of history with Kali Reis' Evangeline Navarro, also a detective. And it's not a positive history. They definitely have beef. Check out the more recent trailer below for a peek.
I love a flawed detective in this genre and I am guessing we won't find out right away exactly how and why Det. Danvers is flawed. From screenshots and the trailers, we see that Night Country will take place in an isolated, sparsely populated part of Alaska and involve a perplexing series of murders. We also note how Native Peoples in that area are affected or even implicated/involved in some way, either currently or via some past connection.
What do we know about the plot?
What we know so far: in an area of northern Alaska and during the Polar Night, the small crew of an Arctic scientific research station go missing with no trace. Danvers and Navarro used to work togther but Something Happened. My guess is that a crime they investigated went pear-shaped and someone innnocent died...and Navarro holds Danvers responsible. Now, the two must combine forces and put aside their beef to solve these crimes. I'm excited about the potential tension between the two leads.
I'm immediately drawn in because of the mood, the promise of grisly and complex crimes, forbidding and isolated setting and environment, and the history of the show itself. I felt the first season was groundbreaking, the second fell flat, and the third bounced back a bit but not enough to bring it to the former glory of that initial season. What did you think? Did you watch True Detective, Season 1 through 3?
