What's up there?

Rigor Mortis: Haunting and Memorable

This Hong Kong supernatural horror film, directed by Juno Mak, delivers a bone-chilling experience that will leave you haunted long after the credits roll. My partner and I first saw Rigor Mortis a few years ago and it definitely sparked good conversation. It's floaty, highly stylized, and moody.

The film brilliantly weaves together elements of traditional Chinese vampire mythology, ghost stories, and modern horror, creating a unique and deeply unsettling atmosphere. The tension builds steadily, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the movie. Mak's direction artfully blends psychological horror with visceral scares, making Rigor Mortis a truly unforgettable cinematic experience.

Desperate Measures in a Supernatural Setting

"Rigor Mortis" takes place in a gloomy and decaying housing complex, where a washed-up actor, Chin Siu-Ho, moves in hoping to start afresh after a failed career and a broken family. Little does he know that the building is haunted by vengeful spirits and malevolent supernatural forces. As he settles into his new home, he encounters a series of bizarre and terrifying events that force him to confront the horrifying truth about the place he now calls home. He'll confront vampires, vampire hunters, black magic, and his own guilt.

Hey, girls!

Visually, Rigor Mortis is a masterpiece of horror aesthetics. The film's cinematography is nothing short of stunning. The decaying building is transformed into a hauntingly beautiful yet terrifying setting, with dimly lit corridors, flickering lights, and eerie shadows that create an atmosphere of dread and despair. Mood carries the work load in this film!

Classification as Horror?

Upon rewatch, I do wonder about classifying Rigor Mortis as a straight-up horror film. It's definitely creepy with haunting themes, carefully stylized cinematography, and a solid cast. The plot does meander a bit and it might take some hard thinking to keep track of what exactly is going on. But it's charming, in a way, and that's why I added it to this year's list.

I don't want to spoil too much in case you decide to add it to your October #31daysofhorror watchlist and challenge. Rigor Mortis has some traditional gory bits but relies heavily on mood and the skill of the actors in place of plot clarity. I'd give it a solid 3/5. Let me know if you watch it!
