#31DaysofHorror, Week 2 and Indigenous People's Day: Blood Quantum (2019), Horror with a Message

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

#31DaysofHorror continues with Blood Quantum, a gory zombie flick featuring First Nation Peoples and plenty of blood and guts for the horror movie enthusiast.

Skoden! In honor of Indigenous People's Day, we've added an extra movie to our watchlist this week. #31DaysofHorror has been rolling along nicely. We keep adding more movies, as we usually do, because we love horror films so much! And this week was no different.

Squeezing into the first night of Week 2, we have Blood Quantum, a gory zombie flick featuring the same First Nations tribe featured in the new better-than-it-should-be Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.

Blood Quantum: Social Commentary Horror?

I was so excited to settle in for a Native American horror film, especially one that might use horror to comment on social issues, which I assumed it would by the title. And even though there were elements I enjoyed, Blood Quantum just didn't hold up. It won't be on our repeat roster, sadly. I was disappointed because the plot was solid, the acting was good enough, the beginning made me hopeful it would flesh out, so to speak. But alas, no. As with many horror films, the narrative fizzled, the pacing let us down, and even though it picked back up a bit by the end, it had already lost its audience.

Blood Quantum trailer: See for yourself!

As always, watch for yourself. People like different things in movies. I'm mainly upset because it started off so well! I found my favorite character (Gisigu, the grandfather), there was the promise of some spatter-y gore, and it had that sliver of humor I've come to anticipate in current Native American film/tv. Check the trailer and see for yourself.

#31DaysofHorror Continues: Stay tuned

We're not reviewing every movie from each week but I'll discuss them all on our next episode of the Bed Picnic podcast. Have you made your list yet? What are you watching for the October horror watchlist challenge?
